In 2004, Dr. Ruenes established ASSISTS (America-Senegal Surgical Initiative, Surgeons Teaching Surgeons), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing African surgeons training and support to help eliminate suffering from medical conditions endemic to West Africa. The collaboration involves American and West African surgeons working together in Senegal to incorporate contemporary surgical techniques and improve the facilities in which these services are provided.

The Program honors Serigne Magueye Gueye, MD, FWACS, the Urology Care Foundations 2023 Humanitarian of the Year Awardee, which is bestowed upon an individual who exemplifies the spirit of philanthropy as evidenced by their humanitarian work.
