“I’ve explored both the difficulties and great rewards of providing health care to one of the world’s most underserved populations. What keeps me going is to see how a project can have such a huge impact and to witness the people’s eagerness to learn and help improve the situation in their own country. There is such a need. They are grateful.” ~ Al Ruenes, MD

In 2004, Dr. Ruenes established ASSISTS (America-Senegal Surgical Initiative, Surgeons Teaching Surgeons), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing African surgeons training and support to help eliminate suffering from medical conditions endemic to West Africa. The collaboration involves American and West African surgeons working together in Senegal to incorporate contemporary surgical techniques and improve the facilities in which these services are provided.

Dr. Serigne Magueye Gueye is the recipient of the Urology Care Foundation's 2023 Humanitarian Recognition Award.
